Orchid story...

My daughter gave me this beautiful orchid plant when she visited last summer.
And it bloomed and bloomed for six months in my yoga studio. It even sprouted
further out with five more blossoms you see here when I thought it was all but done.
Such a miraculous spike that I took this photo to share with her.

I had the greatest surprise birthday gift last week when my girls showed up in my Yoga class. From Hawaii with Jasmine/ginger leis! ... 3300 miles! Redeye! Ahhhh... heaven!

When they left, all the blossoms finally let go.
I'd like to imagine that the orchids waited to see them again.
The last blossom fell this morning and the girls are back home safe.

What a gift! and how I miss them,

Ordinary stones...

How happy is the little stone
That rambles in the road alone,
And doesn't care about careers,
And exigencies never fears;
Whose coat of elemental brown
A passing universe put on;
And independent as the sun,
Associates or glows alone,
Fulfilling absolute decree
In casual simplicity.

Gifts from traveling friends + my own collection.
Clockwise starting with round black stone: from Rio Grande, Mt. Kailash, Maine coast,
New Zealand, Bolivia, tiny one from Ireland and Hawaiian coral in the center.
Can you guess which ones I picked up?

Apple sweet Apple...

Empty begging bowl...

"What we need will come to us... and at the end of the day our bowls will be filled."
- Buddha

When I was a girl in Korea young buddhist monks or nuns would come by
our house regularly with their begging bowls. We always filled their bowls with rice.
Although I didn't know it at the time, they were learning humility and we were
practicing generosity and compassion.
They would transfer our rice into a big sack and went on to the next house
with an empty bowl.

A long time ago, Toshiko gave me 3 raku bowls just because I admired them so.
Occasionally, I drink tea from her bowls and reflect on her spontaneous generosity.
